Crazy Like Me
You meet all sorts of kooks and wingnuts when traveling; this is always the way it is. Of course, some are more eccentric than others and it’s always such a treat to find a few people who aren’t just backpacking through Europe or doing some package adventure to one of the so-imagined “safe” countries.
Fhar met the two French men who are driving an Indian tuk tuk from Calcutta to Paris while he was staying at a monastery in southern Syria. I met them after Fhar and I reunited in Damascus. And since we were all going in the same direction, they are now staying with us at Fhar’s house outside of Cairo. For me at least, since I’ve been hanging out with Fhar all day everyday for the past six weeks and dependent on him for so much communication and protection from the advances of dudes, it’s nice to have some other folks around with whom I share more cultural norms. Especially since these guys are mellow and interesting, I don’t have to cover my tattoos around them, they help with the dishes, and offer tiny bottles of Chartreuse. Magnifique!
